Konjunktiv II of "sein": wäre

The verb "sein" is almost never used with "würde". Instead it has its own short Konjunktiv II form "wäre", derived from the Präteritum "war" + umlaut + ending.

You use "wäre" for unreal states, wishes and assumptions (That would be nice!). It is one of the most common Konjunktiv II forms.

Note:

• "wäre" = würde sein (but nicer). Never say "würde sein".
• Very common in advice: An deiner Stelle wäre ich vorsichtig. (I'd be careful.)
• "Das wäre alles." is a polite closing line (e.g. in a restaurant).

Examples:

• Ich wäre jetzt gern im Urlaub. (I'd love to be on holiday now.)
• Es wäre toll, wenn du kommen könntest. (It would be great if you could come.)
• Wärst du so nett und machst das Fenster zu? (Would you be so kind as to close the window?)
