Höfliche Bitten & Wünsche mit Konjunktiv II

Polite requests & wishes with Konjunktiv II

In everyday speech the indicative often sounds too direct. The Konjunktiv II of modal verbs makes requests, suggestions and advice much more polite. The forms come from the Präteritum + umlaut (except "sollte" and "wollte").

Note:

  • "Könnten Sie …?" is far more polite than "Können Sie …?".
  • "sollte" gives advice: Du solltest mehr schlafen. (You should sleep more.)
  • "dürfte" expresses a polite assumption: Das dürfte stimmen. (That's probably right.)

Examples:

  • Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? (Could you please help me?)
  • Du solltest zum Arzt gehen. (You should see a doctor.)
  • Dürfte ich Sie etwas fragen? (Might I ask you something?)
