Relativsätze mit Präpositionen
Relative clauses with prepositions
Sometimes the verb in the relative clause needs a preposition (arbeiten mit, warten auf, sprechen über). Then the preposition comes before the relative pronoun, at the very start of the clause – and it determines the case.
First think which preposition the verb needs, then which case that preposition requires (dative or accusative), then the matching relative pronoun.
| Preposition + antecedent | Relative pronoun |
|---|---|
| mit + der Mann (dative) | mit dem |
| mit + die Kollegin (dative) | mit der |
| auf + der Tisch (dative) | auf dem |
| für + das Kind (accusative) | für das |
Note:
- The preposition comes first, not at the end (unlike English).
- The case comes from the preposition.
- For things you can often use "wo(r)+preposition": das Thema, worüber wir reden.
Examples:
- Das ist die Kollegin, mit der ich arbeite. (That's the colleague I work with.)
- Der Stuhl, auf dem du sitzt, ist neu. (The chair you're sitting on is new.)
- Das ist das Projekt, an dem wir arbeiten. (That's the project we're working on.)
Das ist die Kollegin, mit ___ ich arbeite.
