"um...zu" (Zweck)
"um … zu" (purpose)
"um … zu" answers "What for? / Why?" and expresses a purpose or goal (in order to). "um" stands at the start of the clause, "zu" + infinitive at the end.
Key condition: the subject in both parts must be the same. If it differs, use "damit" instead (with its own verb).

Note:
- "um … zu" only with the same subject; otherwise "damit".
- A comma comes before "um".
- You can rephrase "um … zu" with "damit": …, damit ich in Deutschland arbeite.

- Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu arbeiten. (I learn German in order to work in Germany.)
- Wir gehen ins Bett, um früh aufzustehen. (We go to bed in order to get up early.)
- Sie ruft an, um einen Termin zu machen. (She calls in order to make an appointment.)
