Adjektivdeklination im Nominativ und Akkusativ

Adjective declension: nominative & accusative

When an adjective stands before a noun, it takes an ending. After the definite article (der/die/das) it's easy: the ending is almost always -e or -en (weak declension).

In the nominative the ending is usually -e. Moving to the accusative, only the masculine form changes from -e to -en (just like the article). Feminine, neuter and plural stay the same.

GenderNominativeAccusative
masculineder große Mannden großen Mann
femininedie schöne Fraudie schöne Frau
neuterdas kleine Kinddas kleine Kind
pluraldie netten Leutedie netten Leute

Note:

  • Only masculine changes (nom. -e → acc. -en).
  • Plural after "die" is always -en.
  • No ending is needed only when the adjective comes after the noun (Der Mann ist groß).

Examples:

  • Ich sehe den großen Mann. (I see the tall man.)
  • Die kleine Katze schläft. (The little cat is sleeping.)
  • Wir kaufen das neue Auto. (We're buying the new car.)

Ich sehe den ___ Mann. (groß, Akkusativ)
