Passive substitute: the "man" construction

Instead of a passive you can use an active sentence with "man". "man" is an indefinite subject – who acts remains open. In spoken German this is often more natural than the passive.

Note:

• "man" is the subject (nominative); the verb is in the 3rd person singular.
• The accusative object stays accusative: Man repariert das Auto.
• Fits well when the acting person is unimportant/general.

Common mistakes

• ❌ Man sprechen hier Deutsch. → ✅ Man spricht hier Deutsch. (verb in the 3rd person singular).
• ❌ using "man" in the accusative → the accusative form is "einen": Das ärgert einen.

Examples:

• Man spricht hier Deutsch. (German is spoken here.)
• In Deutschland isst man viel Brot. (In Germany people eat a lot of bread.)
• Man sollte pünktlich sein. (One should be punctual.)
