Wiederholung: Passiversatzformen im Vergleich
Review: passive substitute forms compared
Three forms often replace a passive with "können"/"müssen". Example "The problem can be solved":
| Form | Example |
|---|---|
| "sich lassen" + infinitive | Das Problem lässt sich lösen. |
| "man" + active | Man kann das Problem lösen. |
| "sein" + zu + infinitive | Das Problem ist zu lösen. |
Nuances:
- "sich lassen" and "man" → mostly possibility ("can").
- "sein + zu" → possibility or necessity (context) and very formal.
Note:
- All three avoid the "real" werden-passive.
- "man" is the most colloquial, "sein + zu" the most formal.
Common mistakes
- ❌ mixing forms: Das lässt sich zu machen. → ✅ Das lässt sich machen. / Das ist zu machen. (don't combine them).
- ❌ wrong register: "sein + zu" in a casual chat → there "man kann …" fits better.
Examples:
- Das lässt sich machen. / Man kann das machen. / Das ist zu machen. (all: This can be done.)
- Fehler lassen sich vermeiden. (Mistakes can be avoided.)
- Die Vorschrift ist einzuhalten. (The rule must be observed.)
