Indirekte Fragen/Aufforderungen
Indirect questions and commands
Not only statements, but also questions and commands can be reported indirectly. The verb goes into Konjunktiv I and to the end of the clause (subordinate clause).
Indirect questions:
- W-question → with the question word: „Wann kommst du?" → Er fragt, wann ich komme.
- Yes/no question → with "ob" (whether): „Hast du Zeit?" → Er fragt, ob ich Zeit habe.
Indirect commands are expressed with "sollen":
- „Warte!" → Er sagt, ich solle warten. (He says I should wait.)
- „Seien Sie pünktlich!" → Sie bittet, wir sollten pünktlich sein.
| Direct speech | Reported speech |
|---|---|
| „Wo wohnst du?" | Sie fragt, wo ich wohne. |
| „Kommst du mit?" | Er fragt, ob ich mitkomme. |
| „Ruf mich an!" | Sie sagt, ich solle sie anrufen. |
More examples
- „Warum lachst du?" → Sie fragt, warum ich lache. (She asks why I am laughing.)
- „Kann ich helfen?" → Er fragt, ob er helfen könne. (He asks whether he can help.)
- „Bringen Sie das Formular mit!" → Man teilt mit, wir sollten das Formular mitbringen. (We are told to bring the form.)
Common mistakes
- ❌ Er fragt, ob ich Zeit habe? (no question mark) → ✅ Er fragt, ob ich Zeit habe. (an indirect question is a statement → full stop).
- ❌ Er fragt, dass ich Zeit habe. → ✅ Er fragt, ob ich Zeit habe. (yes/no questions need "ob", not "dass").
- ❌ Sie sagt, ich muss warten. → ✅ Sie sagt, ich solle warten. (command with "sollen").
Note:
- No question word → always "ob".
- Command → "sollen" in Konjunktiv I (er solle, sie solle).
- The verb moves to the end of the subordinate clause.
- Indirect questions end with a full stop, not a question mark.
