Passiv mit Modalverben im Präsens
Passive with modal verbs (present)
Combining the passive with a modal verb creates a typical sentence bracket: the modal verb is conjugated (position 2), and at the end of the clause stand Partizip II + "werden" (infinitive).
modal verb + … + past participle + werden
| Active | Passive with modal verb |
|---|---|
| Man muss die Arbeit machen. | Die Arbeit muss gemacht werden. (must be done) |
| Man kann das Problem lösen. | Das Problem kann gelöst werden. (can be solved) |
| Man soll das Formular ausfüllen. | Das Formular soll ausgefüllt werden. (should be filled out) |
Note:
- At the very end there is always the infinitive "werden" (not "wird").
- Before it comes the Partizip II of the main verb.
- The modal verb agrees with the subject: Die Fenster müssen geputzt werden.
