Nominalisierung in formellen Texten
Nominalization in formal texts (nominal style)
In reports, contracts and official German, things are often nominalized: a subordinate clause with a verb becomes a preposition + noun. This sounds more compact and official (nominal style).
| Verbal style (clause) | Nominal style |
|---|---|
| Nachdem die Arbeit abgeschlossen wurde, … | Nach Abschluss der Arbeit … (after completion) |
| Weil das Wetter schlecht war, … | Wegen des schlechten Wetters … (because of the bad weather) |
| Bevor man beginnt, … | Vor Beginn … (before the start) |
Typical prepositions: bei, nach, vor, wegen, trotz, aufgrund, während + noun (often in the genitive).
Note:
- Nominal style is compact and formal, but harder to read.
- In spoken language, the verbal style (with a clause) is preferred.
- Frequent nominalizations: -ung, -Abschluss, -Beginn, -Ankunft.
Common mistakes
- ❌ Wegen das schlechte Wetter → ✅ Wegen des schlechten Wetters (after "wegen" usually the genitive).
- ❌ Nach beenden der Arbeit → ✅ Nach Abschluss der Arbeit (a noun, not the infinitive).
Examples:
- Nach Abschluss des Projekts folgte eine Feier. (After the completion of the project there was a celebration.)
- Aufgrund der hohen Nachfrage wurde die Produktion erhöht. (Due to high demand, production was increased.)
- Bei Bedarf wenden Sie sich bitte an das Sekretariat. (If needed, please contact the office.)
"Nach ___ der Arbeit gehen wir nach Hause." (Abschluss/beenden)
