insofern (als)

"insofern (als)" (restriction)

"insofern (als)" restricts a statement and means "to the extent that / insofar as". It introduces a subordinate clause → the verb goes to the end.

Der Vorschlag ist gut, insofern als er realistisch ist. = The proposal is good (only) to the extent that it is realistic.

Two uses:

• as a subordinating connector: …, insofern (als) er realistisch ist.
• as an adverb (referring back): Er hat wenig geübt. Insofern ist das Ergebnis verständlich. (…In that respect, the result is understandable.)

Note:

• Meaning: restrictive – "only under this condition / in this respect".
• As a connector with "als", the verb goes to the end.
• Belongs to formal argumentative language.

Common mistakes

• ❌ …, insofern als die Fakten stimmen nicht. → ✅ …, insofern als die Fakten stimmen. (subordinate clause → verb at the end).
• ❌ confusing "insofern" with "obwohl" → "insofern" is restrictive, not contrastive.

Examples:

• Die Kritik ist berechtigt, insofern als die Fakten stimmen. (The criticism is justified insofar as the facts are correct.)
• Er hat recht, insofern man seine Perspektive teilt. (He is right to the extent that one shares his perspective.)
• Der Plan ist sinnvoll, insofern als genug Geld da ist. (The plan makes sense insofar as there is enough money.)
