Personal pronouns as reference words

A good text avoids repetition. Instead of naming a noun again and again, you refer back to it with a personal pronoun (er, sie, es, ihn, ihm, ihr …). This creates textual coherence (connection).

Noun (gender)Reference (depending on case)
der Chef (m)er / ihn / ihm
die Chefin (f)sie / sie / ihr
das Kind (n)es / es / ihm

Note:

  • The pronoun follows the gender (der/die/das) and case of the noun.
  • It must be unambiguous which noun it refers to.
  • After prepositions, choose the correct case: an ihm, für sie, mit ihm.

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Das Kind spielt. Er ist glücklich. → ✅ …Es ist glücklich. (mind the gender: das Kind → es).
  • ❌ ambiguous reference: Der Chef traf den Kollegen. Er ging. (who?) → better use a demonstrative or repeat the noun.

Examples:

  • Der Chef kam spät. Er entschuldigte sich. (The boss arrived late. He apologized.)
  • Ich sah die Lehrerin und grüßte sie. (I saw the teacher and greeted her.)
  • Das Projekt ist fertig. Wir haben lange an ihm gearbeitet. (The project is done. We worked on it for a long time.)

Die Studentin gab die Arbeit ab. ___ war erleichtert.
