German C1 · Konjunktiv I Present Tense

Konjunktiv I in der indirekten Rede – C1 German Grammar

Konjunktiv I in reported speech

Konjunktiv I is used to report what someone else said, claimed or wrote. The speaker signals: "This isn't my statement – someone else said it." They take no responsibility for whether it is true.

What changes in reported speech?

  1. Pronouns are adjusted: "ich" → er/sie, "wir" → sie, "mein" → sein/ihr.
  2. The verb is in Konjunktiv I.
  3. The clause can be with or without "dass":
    • Er sagt, dass er müde sei. (verb at the end)
    • Er sagt, er sei müde. (verb in position 2 – more common in writing)

Questions and requests

  • Yes/no question: „Kommst du mit?" → Er fragt, ob sie mitkomme. (He asks whether she is coming along.)
  • Request (with sollen/mögen): „Warte hier!" → Sie sagt, er solle hier warten. (She tells him to wait here.)

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Er sagt, ich sei müde. → ✅ Er sagt, er sei müde. (adjust the pronoun!)
