German C1 · Modal Particles

"mal" und "denn" – C1 German Grammar

Modal particles "mal" and "denn"

"mal" – softens requests

"mal" (from einmal) takes the edge off a request. It sounds casual, friendly and non-committal – like English "just" or "for a sec".

without particlewith "mal"
Komm her! (strict – Come here!)Komm mal her! (friendly – Come here a sec!)
Hilf mir! (Help me!)Hilf mir mal! (Give me a hand, would you?)
Können Sie das erklären?Können Sie das mal erklären? (Could you just explain that?)
Schau! (Look!)Schau mal! (Have a look!)

Combinations:

  • doch mal: even friendlier, encouraging: Probier doch mal den Kuchen! (Go on, try the cake!)
  • mal eben / mal kurz: "just quickly": Kannst du mal eben das Fenster zumachen? (Could you just quickly close the window?)

"denn" – makes questions sound interested and natural

In questions, denn shows that the speaker is genuinely interested or surprised. Questions without denn can sound abrupt in conversation.

functionexample
friendly interestWie geht es dir denn? (So how are you?)
surpriseWas ist denn hier los? (What on earth is going on here?)
mild reproach / impatienceWo warst du denn so lange? (Where have you been all this time?)
doubt (often with eigentlich)Stimmt das denn wirklich? (Is that really true, then?)

Note: denn as a modal particle appears only in questions – don't confuse it with the conjunction denn (= because):

  • Wie heißt du denn? (particle – So what's your name?)
  • Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank. (conjunction – I'm staying home because I'm ill.)

Order of several particles

Fixed order, among others: ja – denn – doch – eben/halt – mal

  • Komm doch mal her! (not: mal doch)
  • Das ist ja eben das Problem. (That's exactly the problem, you see.)

Examples:

  • Gib mir mal den Zucker, bitte. (Pass me the sugar, please.)
  • Warte mal kurz! (Hang on a sec!)
  • Was machst du denn da? (What are you doing there?)
  • Warum hast du denn nichts gesagt? (Why didn't you say anything?)
  • Ruf doch mal deine Oma an! (Why don't you call your grandma!)
  • Hast du denn keinen Hunger? (Aren't you hungry, then?)
