Rhetorische Fragen – C1 German Grammar
Rhetorical questions
A rhetorical question has the form of a question but expects no answer. The answer is obvious to both speaker and listener. It serves to emphasise a statement, involve the listener or express criticism.
Basic rule: the answer is "built in"
| rhetorical question | intended statement |
|---|---|
| Ist das nicht offensichtlich? (Isn't that obvious?) | That is obvious. |
| Wer will schon gerne Steuern zahlen? (Who likes paying taxes?) | Nobody likes paying taxes. |
| Habe ich es dir nicht gesagt? (Didn't I tell you?) | I told you so! |
| Wie oft soll ich das noch erklären? (How many more times do I have to explain?) | I've explained it too often already. |
| Was soll man da machen? (What can you do?) | There's nothing you can do. |
| Bin ich dein Diener? (Am I your servant?) | I'm not your servant. |
Note: a negated rhetorical question means a positive statement – and vice versa.
Typical forms
- with nicht / etwa: Ist das etwa meine Schuld? (Is that my fault, then? = It's not my fault.)
- with denn / schon: Wer glaubt denn schon so etwas? (Who'd believe that? = Nobody.)
- with wohl: Soll ich wohl alles allein machen? (Am I supposed to do everything myself?)
- W-questions with modal: Warum sollte ich lügen? (Why would I lie? = I have no reason to lie.)
Where are rhetorical questions used?
| context | example |
|---|---|
| political speeches | Können wir es uns leisten, nichts zu tun? Nein! (Can we afford to do nothing? No!) |
| advertising | Wer möchte nicht weniger für Strom bezahlen? (Who wouldn't like to pay less for electricity?) |
| essays | Brauchen wir wirklich jedes Jahr ein neues Handy? (Do we really need a new phone every year?) |
| everyday (reproach) | Hast du keine Augen im Kopf? (Are you blind?) |
Note
In an essay or speech rhetorical questions are effective – but use them sparingly! Too many seem pushy or manipulative.
Examples:
- Wer hätte das gedacht? (Who would have thought? = Nobody expected that.)
- Ist es nicht schön, wenn alle zusammen sind? (Isn't it lovely when everyone is together?)
- Muss das denn sein? (Is that really necessary? = It's unnecessary.)
- Was gibt es Schöneres als einen Sonntag am See? (What could be nicer than a Sunday by the lake?)
