Elevated vocabulary
Elevated words are not obsolete but belong to a higher stylistic register. They give texts a literary, ceremonial or educated tone. At C2 level you should be able to understand them and use them deliberately.

Educated vocabulary (foreign words)
Educated texts often use foreign words from Latin, Greek or French:
- ambivalent, eloquent, evident (obvious), marginal (negligible), opportun (opportune), prekär (precarious), subtil (subtle), obsolet (obsolete), Diskrepanz (discrepancy), Paradigma (paradigm)
Choosing the right register
Elevated vocabulary in the wrong context sounds stilted or ironic:
- ❌ Ich begebe mich nun zum Supermarkt, um Brot zu erwerben. (I shall now proceed to the supermarket to acquire bread. – odd in everyday life)
- ✅ Der Präsident begab sich anschließend zum Empfang. (The president then proceeded to the reception. – news, appropriate)

| schwermütig | deeply and lastingly sad (melancholic) |

| prächtig | beautiful and richly furnished (a palace – splendid) |
