Der Bericht – C2 German Grammar
The report
A report informs objectively, accurately and completely about an event or process. The writer remains neutral – personal opinions and feelings don't belong in it.

Typical phrases
- Chronology: Zunächst … – Anschließend … – Daraufhin … – Im weiteren Verlauf … – Abschließend … (First … – Then … – Thereupon … – Subsequently … – Finally …)
- Passive: Die Feuerwehr wurde um 14:30 Uhr alarmiert. (The fire brigade was alerted at 2.30 p.m.)
- Nominal style: Nach Eintreffen der Polizei erfolgte die Sperrung der Straße. (After the police arrived, the road was closed.)
- Precise details: gegen 15 Uhr, in der Hauptstraße 12, zwei Leichtverletzte (around 3 p.m., at Hauptstraße 12, two people slightly injured)
What does NOT belong in a report?

Types of report
- accident report / police report

- minutes (record of the results of a meeting)
- newspaper report (most important first!)
Sample report: Am Montag, dem 3. März, ereignete sich gegen 8:15 Uhr auf der Kreuzung Bahnhofstraße/Ringstraße ein Verkehrsunfall. Ein Pkw missachtete die rote Ampel und stieß mit einem Linienbus zusammen. Dabei wurden drei Fahrgäste leicht verletzt. Die Polizei sperrte die Kreuzung für zwei Stunden. Der Sachschaden wird auf rund 20.000 Euro geschätzt. Der Fahrer gab an, er habe die Ampel übersehen. (On Monday, 3 March, at around 8.15 a.m., a traffic accident occurred at the Bahnhofstraße/Ringstraße junction. A car ignored the red light and collided with a bus. Three passengers were slightly injured. The police closed the junction for two hours. Damage is estimated at around 20,000 euros. The driver stated that he had overlooked the traffic light.)
