German C1 · Konjunktiv I Present Tense

Übung: Konjunktiv I Gegenwart – C1 German Grammar

Practice: Konjunktiv I present – summary

Konjunktiv I shows distance: the writer reports someone else's statement neutrally, without judging it. That's why it is the standard form in news, reports and academic texts.

A text in direct and reported speech

Direct: Der Minister sagte: „Die Lage ist stabil. Wir haben alles unter Kontrolle. Die Bürger müssen sich keine Sorgen machen."

Reported: Der Minister sagte, die Lage sei stabil. Man habe alles unter Kontrolle (sie hätten). Die Bürger müssten sich keine Sorgen machen. (The minister said the situation was stable, everything was under control and citizens need not worry.)

Reporting verbs (vary them!)

Instead of always using sagen: erklären (explain/state), betonen (stress), behaupten (claim), berichten (report), mitteilen (announce), meinen (think), versichern (assure), bestreiten (deny), einräumen (admit), hinzufügen (add), warnen (warn).

  • Die Firma räumte ein, es gebe Probleme. (The company admitted there were problems.)
  • Der Zeuge bestritt, er kenne den Täter. (The witness denied knowing the culprit.)
  • Sie fügte hinzu, das gelte auch für Kinder. (She added that this also applied to children.)

Reported speech without a reporting verb

In newspapers Konjunktiv I often continues over several sentences – the reporting verb appears only at the start: Die Sprecherin erklärte, das Museum bleibe geschlossen. Die Renovierung dauere länger als geplant. Ein neuer Termin stehe noch nicht fest. (The spokeswoman said the museum would stay closed; the renovation was taking longer than planned; no new date had been set.)

Examples:

  • Laut Experten sei die Inflation rückläufig. (According to experts, inflation is falling.)
  • Der Autor betont, Sprache verändere sich ständig. (The author stresses that language is constantly changing.)
  • Die Polizei warnt, die Straßen seien glatt. (The police warn that the roads are slippery.)
  • Die Bürgermeisterin versichert, niemand müsse umziehen. (The mayor assures that nobody has to move.)
