German C1 · Modal Particles
"doch" und "ja" – C1 German Grammar
Modal particles "doch" and "ja"
Modal particles are small, unstressed words that express not information but the speaker's attitude: surprise, impatience, reproach, friendliness … They stand in the middle field (usually after the verb and pronouns) and are not stressed. English often expresses these nuances through intonation or tags like "you know", "come on", "after all".
