Elevated connectors give texts an academic and formal character. What matters is knowing their meaning and their word order exactly.

Compare:
- …, zumal er keine Zeit hat. (conjunction – especially as he has no time)
- …, folglich hat er keine Zeit. (adverb – consequently he has no time)

A mini text with all connectors
Die Stadt plant eine neue Straßenbahnlinie. Das Projekt ist sinnvoll, zumal der Busverkehr überlastet ist. Es ist insofern umstritten, als einige Anwohner Lärm befürchten. Gleichwohl unterstützt die Mehrheit den Plan. Des Weiteren würde die Linie neue Stadtteile erschließen. Mithin spricht vieles für den Bau. (The city is planning a new tram line. The project makes sense, especially as bus services are overloaded. It is controversial insofar as some residents fear noise. Nevertheless the majority supports the plan. Furthermore the line would open up new districts. Hence there is much in favour of building it.)
Examples:
- Das Angebot ist attraktiv, zumal die Lieferung kostenlos ist. (The offer is attractive, especially as delivery is free.)
- Die Ergebnisse sind vorläufig. Nichtsdestotrotz sind sie vielversprechend. (The results are preliminary. Nevertheless they are promising.)
- Die Prüfung war schwer; gleichwohl haben fast alle bestanden. (The exam was hard; nonetheless almost everyone passed.)
- Er hat insofern recht, als wir mehr Zeit brauchen. (He is right insofar as we need more time.)
- Alle Bedingungen sind erfüllt, mithin kann der Vertrag unterzeichnet werden. (All conditions are met; hence the contract can be signed.)
