Wiederholung: Komplexe Konnektoren in Argumenten – C1 German Grammar
Review: complex connectors in arguments
A convincing argument links thesis, reasoning, counter-argument and conclusion logically. Elevated connectors make the relations between ideas precisely visible.
Building blocks of an argument
| building block | connectors | example |
|---|---|---|
| thesis | zunächst, grundsätzlich | Grundsätzlich ist Homeoffice sinnvoll. (In principle, working from home makes sense.) |
(… especially as commuting is eliminated.) |
(In addition, satisfaction increases.) |
| counter-argument | allerdings, gleichwohl, wohingegen | Allerdings leidet die Teamarbeit. (However, teamwork suffers.) |
| concession | zwar … aber, obgleich | Es gibt zwar Nachteile, aber … (There are admittedly disadvantages, but …) |
(Hence a hybrid model is recommended.) |
Complex sentences
At C1 level several connectors are combined in one sentence:
(Especially as the data are unclear, one should – although there is time pressure – wait for further studies.)
Structure: [reason with zumal] + main clause + [insertion with gleichwohl = although].
More examples:
(The measure is expensive, admittedly, but hence economical in the long term, since it avoids follow-up costs.)
(Although the criticism is justified, the advantages outweigh it, especially as the costs are low.)
"zwar … aber" – the classic concession
You concede a counter-argument and then refute it:
(Electric cars are admittedly more expensive to buy, but cheaper to run.)
(There are risks, it's true, but the opportunities outweigh them.)
An argumentative paragraph
(A general speed limit on motorways makes sense, especially as it reduces the number of serious accidents. In addition, it would cut CO₂ emissions. Some fear a restriction of their freedom, admittedly; nevertheless the benefit to the public outweighs this. Hence there is much in favour of introducing it.)
Examples:
(Since resources are limited, we must set priorities.)
(The idea is good, whereas implementation is difficult.)
(Not least for ecological reasons, the project is to be welcomed.)
