Review: Konjunktiv I in academic texts
In academic discussions you must report other people's positions without adopting them. Konjunktiv I is the main tool for this: it shows that a statement comes from someone else.
(The author argues that the study is not representative – that is the author's view, not necessarily mine.)
Phrases for reporting others' positions
| phrase | example |
|---|---|
| X behauptet / argumentiert / vertritt die These, … (claims / argues / holds that) | Schulz vertritt die These, Bildung sei der Schlüssel zum Erfolg. (Schulz holds that education is the key to success.) |
| Laut / Nach X … (according to) | Laut einer aktuellen Studie gebe es keinen Zusammenhang. (According to a recent study, there is no connection.) |
| X zufolge … (according to) | Den Autoren zufolge habe sich die Lage verbessert. (According to the authors, the situation has improved.) |
| Wie X betont, … (as X stresses) | Wie Meyer betont, müsse man die Daten vorsichtig interpretieren. (As Meyer stresses, the data must be interpreted carefully.) |
| Aus Sicht von X … (from X's point of view) | Aus Sicht der Kritiker fehle eine Kontrollgruppe. (In the critics' view, a control group is missing.) |
Others' position vs. your own
| others' position (Konjunktiv I) | own position (indicative) |
|---|---|
| Müller behauptet, die Methode sei veraltet. (Müller claims the method is outdated.) (However, the method is still widespread.) |
| Laut Studie habe die Maßnahme gewirkt. (According to the study, the measure worked.) | Diese Schlussfolgerung halte ich für voreilig. (I consider this conclusion premature.) |
Signalling distance
If you doubt someone else's statement, you can also use these devices besides Konjunktiv I:
- angeblich / vermeintlich (allegedly / supposedly): Die angeblich neue Methode …
- sollen (others' claim): Die Studie soll gefälscht worden sein. (The study is said to have been falsified.)
(The researcher claims to have been the first to discover the effect.)
A typical paragraph from a term paper
(Schneider (2021) holds that social media impair young people's ability to concentrate; use leads to fragmented attention. Critics object that the study does not take long-term data into account. In my view, both positions are partly justified.)
Examples:
(The researchers find that sea levels are rising faster than expected.)
- Dem Bericht zufolge seien 40 % der Befragten unzufrieden. (According to the report, 40 % of respondents are dissatisfied.)
(Critics object that the sample was too small.)
(The author stresses that he collected all the data himself.)
