German C1 · Text Coherence & Connectors

Übung: Textkohärenz – C1 German Grammar

Practice: text coherence – summary

A coherent text reads as a whole: each sentence links to the previous one. To achieve this you combine several devices.

Toolbox for coherent texts

devicefunctionexample
pronounsrefer backDie Studie … Sie zeigt … (The study … It shows …)
synonym / hypernymvariationDer Laptop … Das Gerät … (The laptop … The device …)
demonstrativesemphatic referenceDieser Ansatz … (This approach …)
pronominal adverbsrefer to thingsDafür spricht … (In favour of this is …)
structuring connectorsorganisationzunächst – anschließend – abschließend
logical connectorsrelationshipdeshalb, trotzdem, außerdem
ellipsisomit repetitionEr kam um 8, sie um 9. (He came at 8, she at 9.)
substitutionsubstitute word… nicht den alten, sondern den neuen. (… not the old one but the new one.)

Theme–rheme principle

Good texts are often built like this: known information (theme) at the start of the sentence, new information (rheme) at the end. The rheme of one sentence becomes the theme of the next:

Ich habe mir ein Fahrrad gekauft. Das Rad hat 24 Gänge. Diese sind sehr leicht zu schalten. (I bought a bike. The bike has 24 gears. They are very easy to shift.)

Before – after

Disconnected: Die Stadt baut eine Brücke. Die Brücke kostet 20 Millionen Euro. Die Bürger kritisieren die Brücke. Die Brücke soll 2028 fertig sein.

Coherent: Die Stadt baut eine neue Brücke. Das Bauwerk kostet 20 Millionen Euro. Deshalb wird es von vielen Bürgern kritisiert. Dennoch soll die Brücke bereits 2028 fertig sein. (The city is building a new bridge. The structure costs 20 million euros. That's why it is criticised by many citizens. Nevertheless the bridge is to be finished as early as 2028.)

Examples:

  • Zunächst wurde ein Fragebogen erstellt. Dieser wurde anschließend an 500 Personen verschickt. (First a questionnaire was created. It was then sent to 500 people.)
  • Die Regierung senkt die Steuern. Dadurch sollen Familien entlastet werden. (The government is cutting taxes. This is intended to relieve families.)
  • Viele Studierende jobben neben dem Studium, manche sogar Vollzeit. (Many students work alongside their studies, some even full-time.)
