German C1 · Text Coherence & Connectors

Kohäsionsmittel: Ellipse und Substitution – C1 German Grammar

Cohesive devices: ellipsis and substitution

Besides pronouns and connectors, there are two more ways of avoiding repetition and making texts flow: ellipsis (leaving out) and substitution (replacing).

Ellipsis – leaving out repeated elements

Parts that are clear from the context are omitted:

fullwith ellipsis
Er kam später, sie kam früher.Er kam später, sie früher. (He came later, she earlier.)
Ich trinke Kaffee, und mein Mann trinkt Tee.Ich trinke Kaffee, mein Mann Tee. (I drink coffee, my husband tea.)
Anna hat das Buch gelesen, und Tom hat das Buch auch gelesen.Anna hat das Buch gelesen, Tom auch. (Anna read the book, Tom too.)
Kommst du mit? – Ja, ich komme mit.Kommst du mit? – Ja, gern. (Are you coming? – Yes, gladly.)
Wir haben es versucht, aber wir haben es nicht geschafft.Wir haben es versucht, aber nicht geschafft. (We tried but didn't manage.)

Ellipsis in everyday life and the media:

  • Short answers: Wann? – Morgen. (When? – Tomorrow.) / Wer war das? – Keine Ahnung. (Who was that? – No idea.)
  • Headlines: Kanzlerin in Paris (= The chancellor is in Paris.)
  • Instructions: Bitte nicht rauchen! (No smoking, please!)

Substitution – replacing with another word

A word or phrase is replaced by a shorter substitute:

substituteexample
article / pronoun + adjectiveIch nehme den roten Wagen, nicht den blauen. (I'll take the red car, not the blue one.)
einer / eine / eins / welcheHast du einen Stift? – Ja, ich habe einen. (Do you have a pen? – Yes, I have one.) / Gibt es noch Äpfel? – Ja, hier sind welche. (Are there any apples left? – Yes, here are some.)
es / das (whole sentence)Er hat den Job bekommen. Ich habe es gewusst. (He got the job. I knew it.)
so / auchSie arbeitet hart, und ihr Bruder tut es auch / das ebenfalls. (She works hard and so does her brother.)
tun (substitute verb)Er wollte anrufen, hat es aber nicht getan. (He wanted to call but didn't do it.)

Note

Ellipsis must not make the text incomprehensible. In formal texts full sentences are often safer; in spoken language, on the other hand, ellipsis is completely natural.

Examples:

  • Mein Bruder spielt Gitarre, meine Schwester Klavier. (My brother plays guitar, my sister piano.)
  • Möchtest du ein Glas Wasser? – Danke, ich habe schon eins. (Would you like a glass of water? – Thanks, I already have one.)
  • Die alten Schuhe sind kaputt, die neuen passen nicht. (The old shoes are broken, the new ones don't fit.)
  • Sie wollte das Projekt allein machen und hat es auch getan. (She wanted to do the project alone and she did.)
