German C1 · Unreal Conditional Clauses

Uneingeleitete Bedingungssätze – C1 German Grammar

Conditional clauses without "wenn"

Conditional clauses can be formed without "wenn". The conjugated verb then stands in position 1 of the clause. This form sounds more elegant and written – like English "Had I known …", "Were he here …".

with "wenn"without "wenn" (verb in position 1)
Wenn er hier wäre, würde er helfen.Wäre er hier, würde er helfen. (Were he here, he would help.)
Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich reisen.Hätte ich mehr Zeit, würde ich reisen. (Had I more time, I'd travel.)
Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, …Hätte ich das gewusst, … (Had I known that, …)
Wenn du früher gekommen wärst, …Wärst du früher gekommen, … (Had you come earlier, …)
Wenn wir hätten bleiben können, …Hätten wir bleiben können, … (Had we been able to stay, …)

The main clause that follows

After the wenn-less condition comes the main clause – often with "so" or "dann", especially in elevated language:

  • Hätte ich das gewusst, so wäre ich nicht gekommen. (Had I known that, I would not have come.)
  • Wäre das Wetter besser, dann könnten wir draußen essen. (If the weather were better, we could eat outside.)

Also possible in the indicative (real condition)

Especially in formal texts, instructions and contracts:

  • Sollte es Probleme geben, rufen Sie uns an. (Should there be any problems, call us.)
  • Ist der Antrag unvollständig, wird er abgelehnt. (If the application is incomplete, it will be rejected.)
  • Hat man einmal angefangen, kann man nicht mehr aufhören. (Once you've started, you can't stop.)

Risk of confusion: question or condition?

  • Hätte er das gewusst? → question (question mark, no second clause) – "Would he have known that?"
  • Hätte er das gewusst, wäre er gekommen. → condition (comma + main clause)

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Hätte ich das gewusst, ich wäre gekommen. → ✅ Hätte ich das gewusst, wäre ich gekommen. (The subordinate clause occupies position 1 → the main-clause verb comes directly after it)

Examples:

  • Wäre ich reich, würde ich ein Haus am Meer kaufen. (If I were rich, I'd buy a house by the sea.)
  • Hätten wir mehr Personal, könnten wir schneller arbeiten. (If we had more staff, we could work faster.)
  • Hätte sie den Bus genommen, wäre sie pünktlich gewesen. (Had she taken the bus, she would have been on time.)
  • Sollten Sie Fragen haben, stehe ich gern zur Verfügung. (Should you have any questions, I'm happy to help.)
  • Wäre er nicht krank geworden, hätte er am Marathon teilgenommen. (Had he not fallen ill, he would have taken part in the marathon.)
