Irreale Wunschsätze – C1 German Grammar

Unreal wishes

Unreal wish sentences express that you wish something were different from how it is (present) or was (past). They stand on their own – without a main clause – and usually end with an exclamation mark. The particles nur, doch or bloß are obligatory ("if only …").

Two forms

Present: wishing for a different situation

• Wenn es doch endlich Sommer wäre! (If only it were summer at last! – but it's winter.)
• Wäre ich nur nicht so müde! (If only I weren't so tired!)
• Wenn er bloß anrufen würde! (If only he would call!)
• Könnte ich doch besser singen! (If only I could sing better!)

Past: regret

• Wenn ich nur nicht so viel gegessen hätte! (If only I hadn't eaten so much! – now I feel sick.)
• Hätte ich doch auf dich gehört! (If only I had listened to you!)
• Wenn wir bloß früher losgefahren wären! (If only we had left earlier!)
• Wäre ich nur zu Hause geblieben! (If only I had stayed at home!)

Alternative: "ich wünschte, …" / "ich wollte, …"

• Ich wünschte, ich hätte mehr Zeit. (I wish I had more time.)
• Ich wünschte, ich wäre nicht gegangen. (I wish I hadn't gone.)
• Ich wollte, es wäre schon Freitag. (I wish it were Friday already – elevated.)

Common mistakes

• ❌ Wenn ich mehr Zeit habe! → ✅ Wenn ich nur mehr Zeit hätte! (Konjunktiv II + particle)
• ❌ Ich wünsche, ich hätte … → ✅ Ich wünschte, ich hätte … (Konjunktiv II of wünschen)

Examples:

• Wenn ich doch fließend Deutsch sprechen könnte! (If only I could speak fluent German!)
• Hätte ich bloß den Schirm mitgenommen! (If only I had taken my umbrella!)
• Wenn der Bus nur endlich käme! (If only the bus would finally come!)
• Wäre ich doch nur ein paar Jahre jünger! (If only I were a few years younger!)
• Ich wünschte, ich hätte mehr Geduld gehabt. (I wish I had been more patient.)
