Diskursmarker 'mithin' und 'mithilfe' – C2 German Grammar
Discourse markers "mithin" and "mithilfe"
Although they look similar, these two words have completely different functions – a classic trap at C2 level.

"mithin" – the logical conclusion
"mithin" is elevated and written. It can stand at the start of the clause (verb follows), in the middle field or between two parts of a sentence:
- Alle Bedingungen sind erfüllt. Mithin ist der Vertrag gültig. (All conditions are met. Hence the contract is valid. – position 1 → inversion)
- Der Vertrag ist mithin gültig. (middle field)
- Er war nicht anwesend, mithin nicht beteiligt. (He wasn't present, and thus not involved. – shortened)

"mithilfe" – the means
- mithilfe + genitive: mithilfe eines Wörterbuchs (with the help of a dictionary), mithilfe moderner Technik (with modern technology)
- mithilfe von + dative (if no article marks the genitive): mithilfe von Computern (with the help of computers), mithilfe von Freunden (with friends' help)
- Spelling: mithilfe and mit Hilfe are both correct.

Common mistakes
- ❌ Mithilfe ist die Hypothese bestätigt. → ✅ Mithin ist die Hypothese bestätigt. (Hence the hypothesis is confirmed.)
- ❌ mithin eines Mikroskops → ✅ mithilfe eines Mikroskops (with the help of a microscope)
- ❌ mithilfe Computer → ✅ mithilfe von Computern
Examples:
- Die Temperatur stieg über 100 °C; das Wasser kochte mithin. (The temperature rose above 100 °C; the water therefore boiled.)
- Mithilfe eines Mikroskops konnten die Zellen untersucht werden. (With the help of a microscope the cells could be examined.)
- Die Mehrheit stimmte zu; der Antrag ist mithin angenommen. (The majority agreed; the motion is thus carried.)
- Das Problem wurde mithilfe von künstlicher Intelligenz gelöst. (The problem was solved with the help of artificial intelligence.)
