German C2 · Linguistic Nuance: Sarcasm & Hyperbole

Sarkasmus im Ton erkennen (schriftlich) – C2 German Grammar

Recognising sarcasm and irony in written texts

In conversation, tone of voice and facial expression give irony away. In written texts these signals are missing – so you must pay attention to linguistic clues. This is especially important in glosses, commentaries, satire and social media.

Written irony signals

signalexample
quotation marks around a word ("scare quotes")Die „Reform" hat die Lage verschlimmert. (The "reform" made the situation worse.)
"wie zu erwarten" / "wie immer" (as expected / as always)Wie zu erwarten, kam der Bus zu spät. (As expected, the bus was late.)
exaggerated positive adjectivesEine geniale Idee, die Steuern kurz vor Weihnachten zu erhöhen. (A brilliant idea to raise taxes just before Christmas.)
"sogenannt" (so-called)Die sogenannten Experten lagen völlig daneben. (The so-called experts were completely wrong.)
contradiction between content and evaluationErfreulicherweise wurde auch dieses Jahr wieder nichts erreicht. (Happily, once again nothing was achieved this year.)
particles: ja, natürlich, selbstverständlichDer Zug war natürlich wieder verspätet. (Naturally, the train was late again.)
emojis / punctuation (chat)Toll 🙄 / Super gemacht!!!

Scare quotes vs. real quotation marks

  • Quotation: Er sagte: „Ich komme morgen." (He said: "I'm coming tomorrow." – direct speech)
  • Distancing / irony: Sein „Kompromiss" bestand darin, dass alle nachgeben sollten. (His "compromise" was that everyone else should give in – it wasn't a real compromise.)
  • In speech they are often replaced by a gesture (air quotes) or by saying in Anführungszeichen ("in quotes").

Text types with a lot of irony

  • Glosse: short, pointed opinion piece, often ironic.
  • Satire: exaggerates and mocks social ills.
  • Column: personal commentary, often humorous.

An example from a gloss

Die Deutsche Bahn hat wieder einmal bewiesen, wie zuverlässig sie ist: Pünktlich wie immer erreichte der ICE sein Ziel – mit nur zwei Stunden Verspätung. Für diesen „Service" zahlen wir gern jedes Jahr mehr. (Deutsche Bahn has once again proved how reliable it is: punctual as ever, the ICE reached its destination – only two hours late. We're happy to pay more every year for this "service".)

Examples:

  • Die „schnelle" Internetverbindung brauchte zehn Minuten für eine E-Mail. (The "fast" internet connection took ten minutes for one e-mail.)
  • Wie nicht anders zu erwarten, war der Parkplatz voll. (As was only to be expected, the car park was full.)
  • Herzlichen Dank an die Stadt für die wunderbare Baustelle vor meiner Tür – seit drei Jahren. (Many thanks to the city for the wonderful building site outside my door – for three years now.)
