Intercultural notes
Germans often use dry irony in everyday life. If you don't recognise it, you take statements literally – with embarrassing results. Conversely, be careful with sarcasm at work.
Examples:
- Ich habe dir das schon hundertmal erklärt! (I've explained this to you a hundred times! – hyperbole)
- Wie aufmerksam von dir, mich nicht einzuladen. (How thoughtful of you not to invite me. – sarcasm)
- Der Kuchen ist riesig – der reicht für eine ganze Armee. (The cake is huge – it would feed an entire army. – hyperbole)
- Ein „kleiner" Fehler: Die ganze Datenbank ist gelöscht. (A "small" mistake: the whole database has been deleted. – irony)
