Analysing a passage from a speech

(antithesis)" (We have overcome the crisis. We have secured jobs. We have regained trust. But is that enough? The future is an ocean full of opportunities – but also full of storms.)

How to describe the effect (phrases for analysis)

(The anaphora reinforces / highlights the statement.)
  • Die Metapher veranschaulicht … (The metaphor illustrates …)
(With the rhetorical question, the speaker involves the audience.)
  • Die Antithese betont den Gegensatz zwischen … (The antithesis emphasises the contrast between …)

Examples:

(Truth is a light in the darkness – metaphor)
  • Gestern Hoffnung, heute Enttäuschung. (Yesterday hope, today disappointment – antithesis, ellipsis)
  • Bunt, laut, lebendig – so ist unsere Stadt. (Colourful, loud, lively – that's our city – tricolon)
  • Wollen wir das wirklich zulassen? (Do we really want to allow this? – rhetorical question)
Die Zeit ist ein Dieb.
Wir werden kämpfen. Wir werden gewinnen.
Ist das nicht offensichtlich?
