German C2 · Rhetorical Devices
Rhetorische Frage – C2 German Grammar
The rhetorical question as a stylistic device
At C2 level it's not just about recognising rhetorical questions but about using them deliberately in speeches, essays and commentaries. A rhetorical question expects no answer – it steers the audience's thinking.
Ist das nicht offensichtlich? (Isn't that obvious?) = That is obvious.
Functions in texts
| function | example |
|---|---|
| opening a topic | Was wäre unser Leben ohne Musik? (What would our lives be without music?) |
| forcing agreement | Wer würde nicht in Frieden leben wollen? (Who wouldn't want to live in peace?) |
| criticism / indignation | Wie lange wollen wir noch zusehen? (How much longer are we going to stand by?) |
| transition to the next point | Doch was bedeutet das für die Praxis? (But what does this mean in practice?) |
| closing punchline | Sollten wir nicht endlich handeln? (Shouldn't we finally act?) |
Special form: the question the speaker answers (hypophora)
The speaker asks a question and answers it themselves – this holds attention:
Was ist das Problem? Das Problem ist der fehlende politische Wille. (What is the problem? The problem is the lack of political will.) Warum ist das wichtig? Weil es uns alle betrifft. (Why is this important? Because it affects us all.)
Linguistic features
- negation + positive meaning: Ist es nicht schön …? (Isn't it lovely …? = It's lovely.)
- modal particles: etwa, denn, schon, wirklich: Glaubt denn irgendjemand wirklich daran? (Does anyone really believe that?)
- Konjunktiv II: Wer hätte das gedacht? (Who would have thought?)
- Wer / Was / Wie + general statement: Wer kennt das nicht? (Who doesn't know that feeling?)
Use deliberately – but in moderation
| ✅ effective | ❌ overdone |
|---|---|
| 1–2 rhetorical questions per essay at key points | every paragraph starts with a question |
| clear, recognisable implied answer | question with an unclear answer (sounds unsure) |
Note for academic texts
In strictly academic texts rhetorical questions are used sparingly – research questions (genuine questions) are more usual there: Inwiefern beeinflusst X das Verhalten von Y? (To what extent does X influence the behaviour of Y?)
Examples:
- Können wir es uns leisten, die Warnungen der Wissenschaft zu ignorieren? (Can we afford to ignore the warnings of science?)
- Wer von uns hat nicht schon einmal einen Termin vergessen? (Which of us has never forgotten an appointment?)
- Brauchen wir wirklich noch mehr Autobahnen? (Do we really need even more motorways?)
- Was bleibt also? Die Erkenntnis, dass Veränderung möglich ist. (So what remains? The realisation that change is possible.)
