German C2 · Subtleties of the Subjunctive

Konjunktiv in höflichen Formulierungen – C2 German Grammar

Konjunktiv II in polite phrases

Konjunktiv II makes requests, questions, suggestions and criticism more polite, cautious and distant. At C2 level the point is to master the fine gradations.

Politeness levels of a request

levelexample
direct (imperative)Helfen Sie mir! (Help me!)
neutral (indicative)Können Sie mir helfen? (Can you help me?)
polite (Konj. II)Könnten Sie mir helfen? (Could you help me?)
very politeKönnten Sie mir vielleicht helfen? (Could you perhaps help me?)
extremely polite / formalWären Sie so freundlich, mir zu helfen? (Would you be so kind as to help me?)
distant-formalIch wäre Ihnen sehr verbunden, wenn Sie mir helfen könnten. (I would be much obliged if you could help me.)

Typical forms

functionphrasing
requestWürden Sie bitte …? / Hätten Sie kurz Zeit? / Dürfte ich Sie bitten, …? (Would you please …? / Would you have a moment? / Might I ask you to …?)
wishIch hätte gern … / Ich würde gern … / Ich möchte … (I'd like …)
suggestionWir könnten … / Wie wäre es, wenn …? / Man sollte vielleicht … (We could … / How about …? / Perhaps one should …)
adviceAn Ihrer Stelle würde ich … / Sie sollten … (If I were you I'd … / You should …)
cautious opinionIch würde sagen, … / Ich hätte gedacht, dass … (I'd say … / I would have thought that …)
softening criticismEs wäre schön, wenn … / Wäre es nicht besser, …? (It would be nice if … / Wouldn't it be better to …?)
softening refusalDas würde ich so nicht sagen. / Da wäre ich vorsichtig. (I wouldn't put it like that. / I'd be careful there.)

Past Konjunktiv II for politeness

Especially cautious – as if the request were already in the past:

  • Ich hätte da noch eine Frage. (I'd have one more question. = I have a question.)
  • Ich wollte Sie fragen, ob … (I wanted to ask you whether … – simple past as a politeness form)
  • Das wäre dann alles. (That would be all. – when paying)

Interculturally important

In German, overly direct requests (Geben Sie mir … – Give me …) quickly sound rude in shops or offices. Konjunktiv II + bitte + vielleicht / mal / kurz is the safe choice.

Examples:

  • Könnten Sie mir bitte das Salz reichen? (Could you pass me the salt, please?)
  • Hätten Sie morgen um 10 Uhr Zeit für ein kurzes Gespräch? (Would you have time for a short meeting tomorrow at 10?)
  • Wäre es möglich, den Termin zu verschieben? (Would it be possible to postpone the appointment?)
  • Ich würde vorschlagen, dass wir eine Pause machen. (I would suggest we take a break.)
  • Es wäre schön, wenn Sie das nächste Mal pünktlich kämen. (It would be nice if you came on time next time. – polite criticism)
