German C2 · Subtleties of the Subjunctive

Konjunktiv in hypothetischen wissenschaftlichen Aussagen – C2 German Grammar

Konjunktiv in hypothetical academic statements

In academic texts caution is a virtue: hypotheses, interpretations and conclusions are phrased with restraint (hedging). Konjunktiv II is a central tool for this.

From asserting to cautious phrasing

very directcautious (Konj. II / modals)
Man nimmt an, dass … (It is assumed that …)Man könnte annehmen, dass … (One could assume that …)
Das beweist, dass … (This proves that …)Das könnte darauf hindeuten, dass … (This could indicate that …)
Der Grund ist … (The reason is …)Ein möglicher Grund wäre … (A possible reason would be …)
Wir müssen das ändern. (We must change this.)Es wäre zu überlegen, ob man das ändert. (It would be worth considering whether to change this.)
Die Theorie ist falsch. (The theory is wrong.)Die Theorie dürfte in diesem Punkt nicht zutreffen. (The theory probably doesn't hold on this point.)

Key hedging devices

  1. Konjunktiv II: Es wäre denkbar, dass … / Man könnte einwenden, dass … (It would be conceivable that … / One could object that …)
  2. Modal verbs of supposition: Das dürfte / könnte / mag stimmen.
    • dürfte = quite likely; könnte = possible; mag = admittedly
  3. Adverbs: möglicherweise, vermutlich, wahrscheinlich, offenbar, tendenziell (possibly, presumably, probably, apparently, tendentially)
  4. Verbs: scheinen, deuten auf, nahelegen, vermuten lassen (seem, point to, suggest, give reason to suppose)
    • Die Daten legen nahe, dass … / Die Ergebnisse lassen vermuten, dass … (The data suggest … / The results suggest …)
  5. Limiting expressions: unter Umständen, in gewissem Maße, soweit bekannt (under certain circumstances, to some extent, as far as is known)

Formulating hypotheses

(Were this hypothesis correct, an increase in values would have to appear.)
(If the effect could be replicated, this would be a strong argument for …)
  • Angenommen, die Annahme wäre richtig, dann würde … (Supposing the assumption were correct, then …)

Why so cautious?

  • Scientific results are provisional and refutable.
  • Cautious phrasing shows seriousness and respect for other positions.
  • Too much hedging sounds unsure, though – balance is crucial!

Examples:

(One could argue that the sample was too small.)
(This result is probably due to methodological differences.)
(It would be desirable to repeat the study with more participants.)
(The findings suggest that lack of sleep impairs concentration.)
