German C2 · Subtleties of the Subjunctive
Übung: Feinheiten des Konjunktivs – C2 German Grammar
Practice: subtleties of the subjunctive – summary
The choice between indicative, Konjunktiv I and Konjunktiv II strongly affects a text's tone. At C2 level the subjunctive is used deliberately as a stylistic device.

|---|---|---|
| indicative | facts, own conviction | Die Erde ist rund. (The earth is round.) |
| Konjunktiv I | neutral reported speech | Er sagt, er sei krank. (He says he is ill.) |
| Konjunktiv I | wish / instruction (formulaic) | Es lebe der König! / Man nehme … (Long live the king! / Take …) |
