Homonyme und Mehrdeutigkeit – C2 German Grammar

Homonyms and ambiguity

Homonyms are words that are spelt and/or pronounced the same but have different meanings. They are the basis of many misunderstandings – and many jokes and puns.

Ambiguous sentences (syntactic ambiguity)

Not only words but also sentences can be ambiguous:

  • Er sah den Mann mit dem Fernglas. (He saw the man with the binoculars.) → Did he have the binoculars, or the man?
  • Die Wahl des Präsidenten … (The election of the president …) → Does he elect – or is he elected?
  • Ich habe den Hund der Nachbarin mit dem Hut gesehen. (I saw the neighbour's dog with the hat.) → Who is wearing the hat?

Context clarifies

As a rule, context makes the meaning clear: Ich setze mich auf die Bank im Park. (I sit on the bench in the park.) / Ich hole Geld von der Bank. (I get money from the bank.)

Examples (puns):

  • „Treffen sich zwei Banken. Sagt die eine: ‚Ich bin eine Sparkasse.' Sagt die andere: ‚Ich bin eine Parkbank.'" (Two "banks" meet. One says: "I'm a savings bank." The other: "I'm a park bench.")
  • Der Leiter stieg auf die Leiter. (The manager climbed the ladder.)
  • Sie hat ein Schloss gekauft – leider ohne Schloss an der Tür. (She bought a castle – unfortunately without a lock on the door.)
  • Bei der Wahl wurde ein Wal-Schützer gewählt. (In the election a whale conservationist was elected.)
