German C2 · Wordplay & Ambiguity

Wortspiele in der Werbung – C2 German Grammar

Puns in advertising

Advertising has to grab attention in a few seconds and stick in the memory. To do this it particularly likes to use ambiguity and wordplay. Understanding these slogans shows a very fine feel for language.

Techniques of advertising language

techniqueprincipleexample (typical)
ambiguityone word, two meanings„Wir machen den Weg frei." (We clear the way – a bank: literal + figurative)
idiom reinterpretedfixed phrase taken literally„Da steckt mehr dahinter." (There's more to it / more inside.)
modificationwell-known expression slightly altered„Ich bin doch nicht blöd." (I'm not stupid – electronics store)
rhymesound repeated at the end„Haribo macht Kinder froh …" (Haribo makes children happy …)
alliterationsame initial sound„Milch macht müde Männer munter."
neologismnew word„unkaputtbar" (unbreakable – plastic bottle)
anglicismsmodern, international„Come in and find out."
homophonessound the same„Wir lieben Lebensmittel." / „Lebens-Mittel" (food / means of life)

Analysing a slogan

Example: „Nichts ist unmöglich." (Nothing is impossible – car maker)

  • literally: everything is possible.
  • effect: optimism, innovation, trust – short, rhythmic, easy to remember.

Example: „Bitte ein Bit!" (A Bit, please! – beer brand)

  • alliteration (B-B) + abbreviation of the brand name + rhyme-like sound (Bitte – Bit).

Linguistic creativity: breaking the rules

Advertising deliberately breaks norms to stand out:

  • „unkaputtbar" – grammatically impossible (kaputt is an adjective), but memorable.
  • „Da werden Sie geholfen." – grammatically wrong (should be Ihnen wird geholfen), and became famous precisely because of it.

Why does it work?

  1. The brain "trips" over the ambiguity → attention.
  2. Decoding it is fun → positive feelings towards the brand.
  3. Short, rhythmic sentences stick in the memory.

Examples (invented slogans):

  • For an optician: „Bei uns sehen Sie klar." (With us you see clearly – see + understand)
  • For a bakery: „Unser Brot hat Biss." (Our bread has bite – crunchy + character)
  • For a gym: „Bei uns kommen Sie in Form." (With us you get in shape – physically fit + in good form)
  • For an electricity supplier: „Wir bringen Energie in Ihr Leben." (We bring energy into your life – power + vitality)
