"zumal" und "insofern" – C1 German Grammar

"zumal" and "insofern"

zumal – an additional, especially important reason

"zumal" is a subordinating conjunction (verb at the end) meaning "especially because / all the more so since". It gives an additional reason that reinforces what was said.

Wir bleiben zu Hause, zumal es regnet. (We're staying at home, especially since it's raining.)

sentencemeaning
Ich kaufe das Auto nicht, zumal es zu teuer ist.I'm not buying the car, especially as it's too expensive.
Sie sollte sich ausruhen, zumal sie lange krank war.She should rest, all the more so since she was ill for a long time.
Die Reise ist anstrengend, zumal die Kinder noch klein sind. The trip is tiring, particularly as the children are still small.

Variant: "zumal da" / "zumal wenn": Das ist gefährlich, zumal wenn es dunkel ist. (That's dangerous, especially when it's dark.)

insofern – "in this respect" / "as far as that goes"

1. As an adverb (verb in position 2, refers back to what was said):

Er hat sich entschuldigt. Insofern ist der Streit beendet. (He apologised. To that extent the dispute is over.)

2. As a conjunction "insofern (als)" – restricts a statement: "insofar as" / "to the extent that":

Der Plan ist gut, insofern (als) er wenig kostet. (The plan is good insofar as it costs little – but only in that respect.)

Typical combination: insofern … als: Er hat insofern recht, als die Kosten tatsächlich gestiegen sind. (He is right insofar as costs really have risen.)
