German C1 · Nominal Style vs. Verbal Style

Übung: Nominalstil vs. Verbalstil – C1 German Grammar

Practice: nominal vs. verbal style – summary

Good writers choose the style deliberately, according to text type and reader.

nominal styleverbal style
effectobjective, distant, compactlively, clear, personal
text typesscience, administration, law, newsstories, conversation, e-mail, blogs
typical features-ung nouns, genitive, prepositionsverbs, subordinate clauses, conjunctions
risk"officialese", hard to readtoo long-winded for technical texts

One text in both styles

Nominal style (report): Nach Prüfung der Unterlagen und Rücksprache mit der Abteilung erfolgt die Bearbeitung Ihres Antrags. Bei Unvollständigkeit der Angaben ist eine Verzögerung möglich.

Verbal style (e-mail): Sobald wir Ihre Unterlagen geprüft und mit der Abteilung gesprochen haben, bearbeiten wir Ihren Antrag. Wenn Angaben fehlen, kann es länger dauern. (As soon as we've checked your documents and spoken to the department, we'll process your application. If information is missing, it may take longer.)

Typical pairs to learn

preposition + nounconjunction + verb
bei Regenwenn es regnet (when it rains)
wegen Krankheitweil er krank ist (because he is ill)
trotz der Kälteobwohl es kalt ist (although it is cold)
nach dem Essennachdem wir gegessen haben (after we've eaten)
vor der Abfahrtbevor wir abfahren (before we leave)
zur Verbesserung der Qualitätum die Qualität zu verbessern (to improve quality)
durch Sparenindem man spart (by saving)
seit seinem Umzugseitdem er umgezogen ist (since he moved)

Tip: the right mix

A text works best when you mix: nominal style for facts and definitions, verbal style for explanations and examples. More than three -ung nouns in one sentence is a warning sign!

Examples:

  • Aufgrund der Verspätung des Zuges … ↔ Weil der Zug Verspätung hatte, … (Because the train was late …)
  • Zur Beantragung eines Visums … ↔ Um ein Visum zu beantragen, … (To apply for a visa …)
  • Ohne Zustimmung der Eltern … ↔ Ohne dass die Eltern zustimmen, … (Without the parents' consent …)

Nominalstil: "die ___ der Untersuchung" (durchführen, Nominalisierung)
