Practice: participial attributes – summary
Extended participial attributes are typical of newspaper, academic and administrative texts. They pack a lot of information into one noun phrase and make sentences compact – but also harder to read.
The three types at a glance

One sentence – two styles
With relative clauses (easier): Die Maßnahmen, die von der Stadt beschlossen wurden, sollen die Zahl der Unfälle, die sich jedes Jahr ereignen, senken.
With participial attributes (more compact): Die von der Stadt beschlossenen Maßnahmen sollen die Zahl der sich jährlich ereignenden Unfälle senken. (The measures adopted by the city are intended to reduce the number of accidents occurring every year.)
Checklist
- ✅ Is the participle directly before the noun?
- ✅ Does it have the correct adjective ending?
- ✅ Is the meaning right (active → P I, passive → P II)?
- ✅ Are all extensions between the article and the participle?
Common mistakes
- ❌ der wachsend Markt → ✅ der wachsende Markt
- ❌ die gestern geschriebene Briefe → ✅ die gestern geschriebenen Briefe
- ❌ die veröffentlichte letztes Jahr Studie → ✅ die letztes Jahr veröffentlichte Studie
Examples from newspapers:
- Die seit Monaten andauernden Verhandlungen wurden abgebrochen. (The negotiations that had been going on for months were broken off.)
- Der im Koalitionsvertrag vereinbarte Mindestlohn tritt im Januar in Kraft. (The minimum wage agreed in the coalition agreement comes into force in January.)
- Die Zahl der an Diabetes erkrankten Kinder hat zugenommen. (The number of children suffering from diabetes has increased.)
- Die bis Ende des Jahres einzureichenden Unterlagen finden Sie online. (You can find the documents to be submitted by the end of the year online.)
