German C1 · Extended Participial Attributes

Umwandlung Relativsatz <-> Partizipialattribut – C1 German Grammar

Conversion: relative clause ↔ participial attribute

In formal texts, participial attributes often replace relative clauses – the text becomes more compact. When speaking, or for more clarity, you convert attributes back into relative clauses.

Relative clause → participial attribute (4 steps)

Die Studie, die letztes Jahr veröffentlicht wurde, … (The study that was published last year …)

  1. Delete the relative pronoun and the auxiliary: die letztes Jahr veröffentlicht wurde
  2. Active/simultaneous → Partizip I; passive/completed → Partizip II
  3. Put extension + participle before the noun
  4. Add the adjective ending → die letztes Jahr veröffentlichte Studie

When does it NOT work?

  • Active relative clauses with a haben perfect: der Mann, der das Buch gelesen hat → ❌ der das Buch gelesene Mann
  • Relative clauses where the pronoun is an accusative/dative object: der Mann, dem ich geholfen habe → no simple attribute

Examples:

  • Die Firma, die im Jahr 1950 gegründet wurde → die im Jahr 1950 gegründete Firma (the company founded in 1950)
  • Die Kinder, die auf der Straße spielen → die auf der Straße spielenden Kinder (the children playing in the street)

  • Die Fragen, die noch beantwortet werden müssen → die noch zu beantwortenden Fragen (the questions still to be answered)
