Unreal conditional sentences describe situations that are not real – in the present (hypothetical) or in the past (didn't happen). They often come with regret, reproach, relief or speculation.

Typical situations
- Regret: Wenn ich nur mehr gelernt hätte! (If only I had studied more!)
- Speculating about history: Wenn das Internet nicht erfunden worden wäre, würden wir heute noch Briefe schreiben. (If the internet hadn't been invented, we'd still be writing letters today.)
- Relief: Wenn du nicht gebremst hättest, wäre etwas Schlimmes passiert. (If you hadn't braked, something terrible would have happened.)
Examples:
- Wenn ich den Job angenommen hätte, würde ich jetzt in München wohnen. (If I had taken the job, I would be living in Munich now.)
- Hätten wir das Ticket früher gebucht, wäre es billiger gewesen. (Had we booked the ticket earlier, it would have been cheaper.)
- Du hättest mir die Wahrheit sagen müssen! (You should have told me the truth!)
- Ich wäre beinahe gestürzt. (I nearly fell.)
- Sie sieht aus, als ob sie die ganze Nacht nicht geschlafen hätte. (She looks as if she hadn't slept all night.)
