The connector "dessen ungeachtet"
"dessen ungeachtet" means "regardless of this / notwithstanding this / nevertheless". It belongs to the very formal register and is found mainly in administrative, legal and technical texts and in quality journalism.
Die Kosten haben sich verdoppelt. Dessen ungeachtet hält die Stadt an dem Projekt fest. (Costs have doubled. Notwithstanding this, the city is sticking to the project.)
Grammar
- dessen is a genitive (= "of it"), ungeachtet is a preposition taking the genitive, here placed after its object.
- As an adverbial, dessen ungeachtet usually stands in position 1 → the verb follows directly.
- Variant: ungeachtet dessen, … (same meaning).
The preposition "ungeachtet" + genitive
"ungeachtet" can also stand directly before a noun (= trotz, formal):
- Ungeachtet der Proteste wurde das Gesetz verabschiedet. (Despite the protests, the law was passed.)
- Ungeachtet seines Alters ist er sehr sportlich. (Regardless of his age, he is very athletic.)
- Die Regel gilt für alle, ungeachtet ihrer Herkunft. (The rule applies to everyone regardless of origin.)

Risk of confusion
- ungeachtet ≠ unbeachtet! unbeachtet = unnoticed: Der Brief blieb unbeachtet liegen. (The letter lay unnoticed.)

- Die Gutachter äußerten Bedenken. Dessen ungeachtet wurde der Bau genehmigt. (The experts voiced concerns. Notwithstanding this, construction was approved.)
- Die Frist ist abgelaufen; ungeachtet dessen wird Ihr Antrag geprüft. (The deadline has passed; regardless, your application will be examined.)
- Ungeachtet aller Warnungen fuhr er weiter. (Despite all warnings, he drove on.)
- Der Vertrag bleibt ungeachtet der Kündigung bis Jahresende gültig. (Notwithstanding the notice of termination, the contract remains valid until the end of the year.)
- Die Mehrheit stimmte dagegen. Dessen ungeachtet setzte der Vorstand die Maßnahme um. (The majority voted against. Nevertheless the board implemented the measure.)
