One text – four connectors
Die Haushaltslage der Gemeinde ist angespannt. Dennoch wurde der Bau einer neuen Schule beschlossen. Die Entscheidung ist insofern nachvollziehbar, als die Schülerzahlen stark steigen. Kritiker bemängeln die hohen Kosten. Dessen ungeachtet hält der Gemeinderat an seinem Beschluss fest. Nichtsdestotrotz sollten Einsparmöglichkeiten geprüft werden. (The municipality's budget is tight. Nevertheless, the construction of a new school was approved. The decision is understandable insofar as pupil numbers are rising sharply. Critics object to the high costs. Notwithstanding this, the council is sticking to its decision. Nonetheless, opportunities for savings should be examined.)
Common mistakes
- ❌ Dessen ungeachtet die Stadt baut weiter. → ✅ Dessen ungeachtet baut die Stadt weiter.
- ❌ Er hat insofern recht, weil … → ✅ Er hat insofern recht, als …
- ❌ nichtsdestotrotz in a formal legal text → dessen ungeachtet is better.
Examples:
- Die Nachfrage sinkt; dennoch erhöht der Hersteller die Produktion. (Demand is falling; nevertheless the manufacturer is increasing production.)
- Das Projekt ist insofern riskant, als die Finanzierung unsicher ist. (The project is risky insofar as funding is uncertain.)
- Nichtsdestotrotz blicken wir optimistisch in die Zukunft. (Nonetheless we look to the future with optimism.)
- Ungeachtet der Einwände wurde der Vertrag unterzeichnet. (Notwithstanding the objections, the contract was signed.)
