Structuring markers: zunächst, des Weiteren, abschließend
Academic texts, presentations and talks need a clear structure. Structuring markers show the reader where in the argument they are. At C2 level it's about variety and precision.
The three phases

Metatextual expressions (text about the text)
- Im Folgenden wird … untersucht. (In what follows, … is examined.)
- Wie oben / bereits erwähnt, … (As mentioned above / already …)
- Darauf wird in Kapitel 4 näher eingegangen. (This is discussed in more detail in chapter 4.)
- Bevor auf … eingegangen wird, soll zunächst … (Before discussing …, we shall first …)
- Nachdem nun … dargelegt wurde, wende ich mich … zu. (Having now set out …, I turn to …)
Subtleties
- zunächst = at first, first of all ≠ zuletzt = last, at the end
- schließlich can mean "finally" or "after all": Wir müssen handeln, wir sind schließlich verantwortlich. (We must act – we are responsible, after all.)
- ferner is more elevated than außerdem.
- zum einen … zum anderen = two equal points (not a contrast!)
Model paragraph (academic)
Zunächst wird in Kapitel 2 der theoretische Rahmen erläutert. Im Anschluss werden die Ergebnisse der Befragung vorgestellt. Dabei wird zum einen auf die Motivation, zum anderen auf die Lernstrategien der Teilnehmenden eingegangen. Des Weiteren werden mögliche Störfaktoren diskutiert. Abschließend werden die Befunde zusammengefasst und ein Ausblick gegeben. (First, chapter 2 explains the theoretical framework. Then the survey results are presented, addressing on the one hand the participants' motivation and on the other their learning strategies. Furthermore, possible confounding factors are discussed. Finally, the findings are summarised and an outlook is given.)
Examples:
- Eingangs sei auf die Bedeutung des Themas hingewiesen. (At the outset, the importance of the topic should be pointed out.)
- Ferner wurde untersucht, ob das Alter eine Rolle spielt. (Furthermore, it was examined whether age plays a role.)
- Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die Hypothese bestätigt wurde. (In summary, the hypothesis was confirmed.)
- Resümierend ist festzuhalten, dass weitere Studien nötig sind. (To sum up, further studies are needed.)
