Genitive chains
In elevated nominal style, several genitive attributes are often strung together. Each genitive attribute specifies the preceding noun.
die Erhöhung der Effizienz der Produktion des Unternehmens (the increase of the efficiency of the production of the company)
Read from back to front: the company → its production → that production's efficiency → the increase of that efficiency.
Building a genitive chain

When is it too much?
Two genitives are often easy to read; three or more quickly become clumsy ("officialese"). Good writers break up long chains.
Strategies for breaking up chains

| verbal style | Das Unternehmen will effizienter produzieren. (The company wants to produce more efficiently.) |
Before: die Erhöhung der Effizienz der Produktion des Unternehmens After: die Steigerung der Produktionseffizienz des Unternehmens or Das Unternehmen will effizienter produzieren.
Genitive without an article: "von" as a substitute
If no article/adjective marks the genitive, use von:
- ❌ der Import Autos → ✅ der Import von Autos (the import of cars)
- ✅ der Import ausländischer Autos (the adjective marks the genitive → possible)
Examples:
- die Bewertung der Ergebnisse der Studie → die Bewertung der Studienergebnisse (the evaluation of the study results)
- die Analyse der Ursachen des Rückgangs der Geburtenrate → die Analyse der Ursachen für die sinkende Geburtenrate (the analysis of the causes of the falling birth rate)
- der Beginn der Bauarbeiten des neuen Bahnhofs → der Baubeginn des neuen Bahnhofs (the start of construction of the new station)
- die Zahl der Teilnehmer der Konferenz → die Teilnehmerzahl der Konferenz (the number of conference participants)
