German C2 · Review: Mastery of Expression
Wiederholung: Konjunktiv, Nominalstil und Präzision im Zusammenspiel – C2 German Grammar
Review: subjunctive, nominal style and precision working together
A masterful sentence can show several levels at once: Konjunktiv II (caution), nominal style (formality) and precise word choice (accuracy).
Man könnte die Durchführung des Projekts als beträchtlichen Erfolg werten. (One could regard the implementation of the project as a considerable success.)
| element | function |
|---|---|
| könnte | Konjunktiv II → cautious, polite evaluation |
| die Durchführung des Projekts | nominal style → objective, formal |
| beträchtlich | precise adjective instead of groß |
| werten | precise verb instead of sehen / sagen |
From a simple to a masterful sentence
| stage | sentence |
|---|---|
| 1 – simple | Das Projekt war ein großer Erfolg. (The project was a big success.) |
| 2 – more precise | Das Projekt war ein beträchtlicher Erfolg. (… a considerable success.) |
| 3 – cautious | Das Projekt dürfte ein beträchtlicher Erfolg gewesen sein. (The project was probably a considerable success.) |
| 4 – nominal + cautious + precise | Die Umsetzung des Projekts ließe sich als beträchtlicher Erfolg werten. (The implementation of the project could be regarded as a considerable success.) |

Note: clarity remains the top priority!
A sentence with subjunctive, nominal style and technical terms must not become incomprehensible. Read your sentence aloud: can it be understood on first reading?
Examples:
- Man könnte argumentieren, dass die Einführung neuer Regeln unverhältnismäßig wäre. (One could argue that introducing new rules would be disproportionate.)
- Die Fortsetzung der Verhandlungen erscheint unumgänglich. (Continuing the negotiations appears unavoidable.)
- Eine Anpassung der Strategie wäre zweckmäßig. (An adjustment of the strategy would be expedient.)
