Review: switching register
Mastery shows in deliberately switching between registers: formal for reports, personal for essays, neutral for summaries, casual in conversation. Whoever masters this can handle any communicative situation appropriately.
One content – five registers
Content: the project is being postponed because there's no money.
| register | wording |
|---|---|
| slangy (chat) | Projekt is erstmal auf Eis – keine Kohle. 🙄 (Project's on ice for now – no cash.) |
| colloquial | Das Projekt wird verschoben, wir haben einfach kein Geld. (The project's being postponed, we just don't have the money.) |
| neutral (e-mail to colleagues) | Leider muss das Projekt verschoben werden, da die Finanzierung noch nicht gesichert ist. (Unfortunately the project has to be postponed, as funding hasn't been secured yet.) |
| formal (letter to a partner) | Wir bedauern, Ihnen mitteilen zu müssen, dass sich der Projektbeginn aufgrund ausstehender Finanzierungszusagen verzögert. (We regret to inform you that the start of the project is delayed owing to outstanding funding commitments.) |
| official / technical | Infolge der Nichtbewilligung der beantragten Fördermittel erfolgt eine Verschiebung des Projektbeginns auf unbestimmte Zeit. (As a result of the non-approval of the requested funding, the start of the project is postponed indefinitely.) |
Adjusting the dials when switching register

| emotion | emojis, particles → neutral word choice |

Typical mistakes when switching register
- register clash: Sehr geehrter Herr Dr. Braun, das Meeting war echt mega! ❌ (Dear Dr Braun, the meeting was totally awesome!)
- over-formalising: Ich erlaube mir, Ihnen mitzuteilen, dass ich Hunger habe. (I take the liberty of informing you that I am hungry. – to a friend) ❌ – sounds funny or ironic.
Examples:
- Neutral: Die Teilnehmenden waren mit dem Kurs zufrieden. (The participants were satisfied with the course.)
- Formal: Der Kurs fand bei den Teilnehmenden durchweg positive Resonanz. (The course met with a consistently positive response from participants.)
- Colloquial: Der Kurs kam echt gut an. (The course went down really well.)
- Essayistic: Selten hat ein Kurs so viele Menschen so nachhaltig begeistert. (Rarely has a course inspired so many people so lastingly.)
