Review: combining stylistic devices

Masterful texts don't use connectors, nominal style and rhetorical devices in isolation but combine them deliberately to achieve impact and clarity at the same time.

The tools working together

toolfunction in the textexample
elevated connectorslogical structurenichtsdestotrotz, mithin, insofern als
nominal styleobjectivity, densitydie Bewältigung der Krise (overcoming the crisis)
metaphorvividnessein Sturm der Entrüstung (a storm of indignation)
(We must …, we can …, we will …)
rhetorical questioninvolving the readerWer wollte das bestreiten? (Who would deny it?)
antithesissharpening contrastnicht Rückschritt, sondern Fortschritt (not regression but progress)
Konjunktiv IIcaution, politenessMan könnte einwenden … (One might object …)

Analysis of a masterful paragraph

„Die Bewältigung des Klimawandels (nominal style) ist keine Frage der Möglichkeit, sondern des Willens (antithesis). Wir haben das Wissen, wir haben die Technik, wir haben die Mittel (anaphora, tricolon). Was also fehlt? (rhetorical question) Nichtsdestotrotz (connector) zögern viele Regierungen – als stünde (Konjunktiv II) uns unbegrenzt Zeit zur Verfügung. Doch die Uhr tickt (metaphor)." (Tackling climate change is not a question of possibility but of will. We have the knowledge, we have the technology, we have the means. So what is missing? Nevertheless many governments hesitate – as if we had unlimited time. But the clock is ticking.)

Three rules for combining

  1. Function before decoration: every device must serve a purpose.
  2. Variety: alternate factual passages (nominal style) with lively ones (verbal style, images).
  3. Dosage: one strong rhetorical device per paragraph is more effective than five weak ones.

Typical combinations

  • rhetorical question + answer + connector: Ist das gerecht? Kaum. Mithin muss das Gesetz geändert werden. (Is that fair? Hardly. Hence the law must be changed.)
  • antithesis + tricolon: Nicht reden, sondern handeln: schnell, entschlossen, gemeinsam. (Not talk, but action: fast, determined, together.)
(The economy's downhill slide requires a reorientation of policy.)

Examples:

(Education is not a luxury but a necessity – nevertheless it is being cut.)
  • Wer, wenn nicht wir? Wann, wenn nicht jetzt? (Who, if not us? When, if not now?)
(The reform was a milestone insofar as it involved all stakeholders for the first time.)
