German C2 · Rhetorical Devices

Anapher und Wiederholung – C2 German Grammar

Anaphora and repetition

Anaphora repeats a word or phrase at the beginning of successive sentences or clauses. It creates rhythm, emphasis and urgency – a favourite device of political speeches.

Wir werden kämpfen. Wir werden gewinnen. Wir werden nicht aufgeben. (We will fight. We will win. We will not give up.)

Anaphora vs. stylistic error

Repetition is a stylistic device when used deliberately and effectively. Accidental repetitions ("Dann … dann … dann …" – then … then … then) are a stylistic error.

Examples:

  • Mit Mut, mit Hoffnung, mit Entschlossenheit gehen wir voran. (With courage, with hope, with determination we move forward.)
  • Es geht um unsere Kinder. Es geht um unsere Zukunft. Es geht um alles. (It's about our children. It's about our future. It's about everything.)
  • Jeder Tag zählt, jede Stunde zählt, jede Minute zählt. (Every day counts, every hour counts, every minute counts.)
  • Gemeinsam haben wir begonnen, gemeinsam haben wir gekämpft, gemeinsam werden wir es schaffen. (Together we began, together we fought, together we will succeed.)
