German C2 · Rhetorical Devices

Metapher und Vergleich – C2 German Grammar

Metaphor and simile

Both stylistic devices transfer an idea from one area to another to make something vivid and memorable.

simile (Vergleich)metaphor (Metapher)
formwith wie / als ob / gleich (like, as if)without a comparison word
exampleEr ist schnell wie der Wind. (He is as fast as the wind.)Er ist ein Blitz. (He is lightning.)
effectexplicit, easy to understandcondensed, stronger, more creative

Simile

  • Sie schläft wie ein Murmeltier. (She sleeps like a marmot = like a log.)
  • Er ist stark wie ein Bär. (He is as strong as a bear.)
  • Das Zimmer sah aus, als ob eine Bombe eingeschlagen hätte. (The room looked as if a bomb had hit it.)
  • Ihre Augen glänzten wie Sterne. (Her eyes shone like stars.)

Metaphor

In a metaphor the comparison word is omitted – the image replaces the concept:

  • Die Zeit ist ein Dieb. (Time is a thief – it "steals" our life.)
  • Er hat ein Herz aus Stein. (He has a heart of stone – he is unfeeling.)
  • Wir stehen am Scheideweg. (We are at a crossroads – we must decide.)
  • Das Meer der Möglichkeiten (the sea of possibilities – very many options)
  • Sie ist die Seele des Unternehmens. (She is the soul of the company – the most important person.)

Everyday metaphors – often no longer noticed

Many metaphors are so common that we no longer perceive them as images ("dead metaphors"):

  • der Flaschenhals (bottleneck), das Tischbein (table leg), der Fuß des Berges (foot of the mountain)
  • eine Flut von E-Mails (a flood of e-mails), ein Berg von Arbeit (a mountain of work)
  • die Preise explodieren (prices explode), die Kurse stürzen ab (share prices crash)

Related devices

  • Personification: things/animals act like people – Die Sonne lacht. Der Wind flüstert. (The sun is smiling. The wind whispers.)
  • Allegory: a whole story as an image – Justitia mit Waage und Augenbinde (Lady Justice with scales and blindfold = justice)

Examples:

  • Bildung ist der Schlüssel zum Erfolg. (Education is the key to success – metaphor)
  • Er kämpfte wie ein Löwe. (He fought like a lion – simile)
  • Die Stadt schläft noch. (The city is still sleeping – personification)
  • Die Wirtschaft befindet sich im freien Fall. (The economy is in free fall – metaphor)

Welcher Satz ist eine Metapher (kein "wie")?
